Wormwood
MODERATE EVIDENCESupplementLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
Artemisia absinthium contains artemisinin (the compound that won the 2015 Nobel Prize for malaria treatment). In supplement form, wormwood is used for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) — a 2014 Johns Hopkins study found herbal therapy including wormwood was equally effective as rifaximin for SIBO. Also: traditional anti-parasitic. CAUTION: contains thujone at high doses — neurotoxic (the 'madness' attributed to absinthe drinking). Limit duration of use. Dose: 500-1,500mg/day for 4-6 week courses.
