Deer Antler Velvet
MODERATE EVIDENCESupplementLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
Deer antler velvet contains IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1) and is marketed for performance enhancement. A 2003 New Zealand study found 70mg/day antler velvet extract did NOT improve strength or endurance vs placebo. The IGF-1 content is too low to affect systemic levels after oral ingestion and GI degradation. WADA does NOT ban antler velvet itself, but spray/injectable forms have caused positive IGF-1 tests. Our assessment: IGF-1 in antler velvet is destroyed by digestion. Marketing fantasy.
