Vinpocetine
MODERATE EVIDENCEBotanicalLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
Vinpocetine is a semi-synthetic derivative of vincamine (from periwinkle plant, Vinca minor). It increases cerebral blood flow by 7-12% through PDE1 inhibition and voltage-gated Na+ channel blockade. Used as a prescription nootropic in Europe (Cavinton®) for cerebrovascular disorders. FDA issued a 2019 warning that it should NOT be sold as a dietary supplement because it doesn't meet the definition (it's a semi-synthetic compound, not a botanical). CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy (teratogenic). Dose: 5-10mg 3x/day. The FDA regulatory status makes it uncertain for US supplement market.
